The Curated Junk Drawer

Everyone has that miscellaneous drawer or perhaps a benchtop - which gradually collects
likeminded objects. These are objects that seem to have no where else to go. If you are someone who owns a junk drawer, have you ever found places for all the things only to find that that pesky drawer filling up again just as quickly?
The Curated Junk Drawer’ exhibited at the Cannery Arts Centre Art Room in May/June 2005.
Elaine invited viewers to consider the concept with humour as she chose to playfully expose the chaotic with charm and fresh perspective. Works like ‘Junk Drawer for the Romantic’ was a soft play on the aesthetic of the junk drawer, while ‘A Series of Driving Offences’ was a sculptural 'dangerous vehicle’ through which a viewer might choose to play, whilst ‘landscape’ commented on a technocratic reality.

Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining

Each artwork has been constructed from UHT cartons which were collected from the community then cleaned, cut into shapes (reversed to reveal a shiny interior) and stapled onto a wooden cloud shaped backing. The resultant cloud formations are reflective of their environment whilst offering a glimpse into the sublime.
‘These silver clouds are my attempt to encourage a viewer to quietly consider the heavenlies and the feeling of an immersion in what is perhaps spiritual, usually above - or even within us. They bring discarded, unnoticed things to a place of loftiness or grandeur, a kind of sublimation that happens through art every day.’

Series: Evening Impressions

This series of smaller encaustic works was an exercise in using a limited palette and beeswax
paint to explore the theme of an evening sunlit rocky headland typical of the Esperance region
and scenic coastal locations visited by the more adventurous nature lover.
